Adding a New Video Card

Adding a video card to your computer can be difficult, but if you take the time to research and learn you can master the process and not have to pay anyone to perform the work. Here are several factors you will need to consider before you undertake the job yourself.

There are a couple of different slots on your system board that are intended for the placement of video cards. Newer computers have AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slots. There are some though that still has the older PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slots. You will need to determine which type is in your computer. Once this has been determined you will need a space where you can work and a way to ground yourself from 'shocking' any components on the system board. You can remove the case and remove the old video card and replace it with the new video card. There are some computers though that the video card is integrated on the system board. You can still add a video card if you have available slots. You will just have to disable the video card that is integrated on the system board. Almost every piece of hardware that you install on a computer will come with drivers. Drivers are software that communicates between the operating system and the hardware. It is important to install the proper driver for the video card because it may not function properly.

The best practice is to read all the instructions before attempting to add the video card to your computer. And don't forget the software!

The Importance of Monthly Disk Defragmentation

The importance of a monthly disk defragmentation can vary, depending on how you use your PC. On heavily used PCs, defragmentation should be done not just every month, but practically every week. This process helps your computer maintain an optimal system. Computers have an internal filing system for files located on the hard drive. When files are created and deleted during routine work on the PC, it leaves gaps in files and lets files be saved in "fragments," essentially slowing down the computer's filing system.

When a defragmentation is run, it takes all the fragments of files and reassembles them as whole files, making them easier for the computer to find and access. This eliminates gaps in the files where future fragments could be saved, as well, though only until a current file is deleted. Windows provides a defragmentation tool for the user which shows file type and movement and tracks the process of the defrag. It will also advise you as to whether a defrag is actually necessary after analyzing the file content on the hard drive.

If your hard drive is not defragmented at least monthly, you may start to notice a considerable slow down on your system. Programs and files will take longer to load and save, and start up and shut down processes will drag. You may choose to wait until you see these signs to start defragging your hard drive, but why bother? It will be much quicker and more efficient if you simply set up a scheduled defragmentation for once a month. Think of it as preventative health care for your computer.

Google Search Basics

Searching is pretty simple. Type in the search box whatever you're looking for, and then click on the Google Search button or hit Enter, and Google will give you different websites that are matching your query.

With just a basic query most of the time you'll get just what you are looking for. However, here are some tips that can assist you in making the most of your searches. Because all the words you type in the query will be used, it means that every word matters and is always case insensitive. To help you to find exactly what you're looking for, Google has several great features.

To find the geographical location for any telephone area code, just type into the Google search box the three-digit area code and hit search. Find web pages that contain similar content by typing the word related: followed by the web address that you are looking for. You can also search for a local business, by typing the category of the business you're looking for and you'll get results with contact information, reviews, and most of time a map.

You can look up different kinds of searches like phrases using “”, synonymous search using ~ in front of the word, or alternate spellings of words can be turned off by separating the word with a plus (+) sign, and many more. Just note that Google ignores characters such as how, where, the, and other letters and digits that will slow down your search without improving it.
